New Broughton Rangers Project

Salford City Reds are one of only 12 professional rugby league clubs who compete in rugby leagues topflight competition Super League.  The club has a history of developing and running innovative community projects and the largest project in conjunction with Countryside Properties is no exception.

Over 75 years ago, the area of Broughton had a highly successful rugby league team who won numerous cup and league titles called Broughton Rangers.  Unfortunately, the club fell on hard times, moved out of the area and then folded.

The "New Broughton Rangers" project is designed to resurrect the old club and develop an open age and junior set up to be based within the site of Countryside Properties' new development in Lower Broughton.

The objectives of the project are to engage the people of Lower Broughton to become pro-active within their community.  The project will look to promote social inclusion of all ages and build up community spirit resulting in a greater sense of pride and ownership in the area using the medium of sport, in particular, rugby league.

The implementation of the "New Broughton Rangers" project will produce a vibrant and sustainable local community, which will see residents and developers working in cohesion for the good of all concerned.

Community coaches from Salford Reds' Community department will be providing rugby league coaching in the area's primary schools and high school with a view to create interest in the new club.

Core themes within the project revolve around developing local facilities, healthy lifestyles, reducing crime in the area, access to further education and employment opportunities.  The scheme will also provide an increase in general leisure and pastime opportunities for the area.
